Come on it's not that bad.

I mean isn't dat 328i with the stripe worth an E46 and E90 M3? It gets much better gas mileage. And it has electric power steering. And less cylinders. And less engine and exhaust noise. And it's slower so less tickets.

Overall it seems very logical to me.

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > Manuél Ferrari
03/13/2014 at 18:06

Kinja'd!!!1

Oh yeah I forgot how good the stripe is. And the electric power steering means you'll have to pay attention more because it's not as accurate. And everyone knows less cylinders = more fun!

You're right Rusto! Just make sure you give them all three cars, or else they might take off the stripes.

it will be such a good car for the money once they (hopefully) release the stick

i'm having a sort of calm peace right now. even though i can't afford another car yet my mind is made up, at least for now.

i want the F430 in red with the gated shifter. i don't care how long it takes to save up and how long it takes to find the right car. i also want the spider since i've never owned a convertible and the main use of the car will be pleasure and not track use.

not having to keep thinking about what to do once i'm ready is a relief. now i may change my mind at any moment. but for now a car just like this one that i had shown you is exactly what i want!

i know that some gearheads think that convertibles are for girls and gays. but i don't give two fuchs about that. cause i like girls and gay people and not worried about someone calling me either one, haha. i'm confident enough about myself not to worry about what people think about the car i bought. if i was in love with the California i would buy it even though people rag on that car.

and i know you're right. i'll see something else and it might mess up my brain. but i'll have to deal with that then. for now i'm at peace, haha

I don't think I'd have any trouble driving around in a convertible Ferrari. I did drive around in a Boxster for awhile and I got nothing but praise! So that wouldn't be an issue I think (I'm pretty sure that stuff stays on the internet to be honest, it's really blown out of proportion)

I'm actually thinking if I can't get a Lotus, that I should really try to get a Cayman. I can probably afford it if I get a '09 or later refresh model.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro
03/13/2014 at 22:18

Kinja'd!!!0

Omg really?

I was going to say Cayman the other day but didn't think your Dad would allow it.

If you can get a Cayman with the DFI engine then DO IT. It's reliable. It's fun. It gets good gas mileage. It's a Porsche! And it's way safer than a go kart Lotus!

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > Manuél Ferrari
03/13/2014 at 22:22

Kinja'd!!!0

Which ones have the DFI engines?! The '09s or later? Since my dad is fond of Porsches he might allow it.

It's also pretty usable/practical!

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro
03/13/2014 at 22:25

Kinja'd!!!0

It's a great car! Sometimes I wish my 911 was a Cayman. Then sometimes I'm glad it's a 911. I can't make my mind up :)

The DFI engine came with the refresh. The 997 got the refresh starting in 2009. I believe the Cayman got it the same year as well.

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > Manuél Ferrari
03/13/2014 at 22:28

Kinja'd!!!0

Hmmm, now I'm just wondering whether I should get the PDK or Manual. I'm leaning towards manual though since I won't be doing much commuting with it.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro
03/13/2014 at 22:33

Kinja'd!!!0

It's the hardest decision. It goes back to what I was saying before about not knowing where your future jobs will be.

The safest thing to do is buy PDK so that you can commute to anywhere anytime.

But the most fun thing to do is go 6MT.

One big justification for going 6MT - Porsche was really dumb until recently with their PDK. They insisted on using Tiptronic-like toggles on the wheel for shifting gears instead of paddles like ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of all other car companies. Paddles were an extra option so it's very hard to find a good deal on a 997 or Cayman with PDK and paddles. I would not want PDK with toggles at all.

So go 6MT and just plan for success. Make sure to get a good job so you can afford a place with 2 parking spots in case you want to keep the car and buy a 2nd car with no stick. Or if you have to sell it but are making good money you can live with the loss when you sell or trade.

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > Manuél Ferrari
03/13/2014 at 22:36

Kinja'd!!!0

I know! It's so difficult to choose. Is their any difference in reliability between older and newer PDKs? And everywhere I look they have those awful toggle switches. I tried using them but their so bad. But I've heard you can switch it out for a paddle steering wheel.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro
03/14/2014 at 00:51

Kinja'd!!!0

I never even looked into the cost of switching out a proper steering wheel! If it's not insanely expensive then it would be a viable issue.

I have not heard of any issues with early PDKs. My Dad used to have a first year Panamera and he had other issues but none with PDK.

PDK seems to have been very reliable right from the start. Porsche waited until they perfected it to launch it. They were really late to the party in 2009. Ferrari and BMW had paddle shift transmissions since the late 90s. Even VW had beat Porsche to market with a DCT. But people say Porsche didn't want to do it until they were positive about it. And I've read they started developing PDK decades before they launched it! They wanted to launch it in a 911 Turbo in the early 90s but couldn't get the tech or cost right.

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > Manuél Ferrari
03/14/2014 at 07:52

Kinja'd!!!0

That's good to hear. That makes the decision even harder!

Look, I found one with paddles: http://www.cars.com/go/search/deta…

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro
03/14/2014 at 16:35

Kinja'd!!!0

Haha it does make it harder! If the PDK was crap then you could just go stick.

That one you found is nice. Seems like an OK price for a 2011.

You know which Cayman ALWAYS has paddles??

The Cayman R. You should totally get it :)

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro
03/14/2014 at 19:16

Cayman is good when you can get it a price much better than a same year 911

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > Manuél Ferrari
03/14/2014 at 21:03

Kinja'd!!!0

Nah that's not his style. He goes to San Francisco like once or twice a year on business though. But that seems like too much effort unless it was a perfect car for my needs like a rare 6MT 430/Gallardo. Caymans are something that'll come and go for years no problem.

I still want an Alfa to be honest...

I need to buy something useful and practical now so I can use it for 10+ years easy. I'd rather have a PDK in case I need to commute all the time.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro
03/14/2014 at 21:06

Kinja'd!!!0

You can't get the Alfa. Put it out of your head. He will not allow it!

I wish he came to LA twice a year. Then it would be super easy for me to pre-screen a car you wanted and couldn't find by you, then have the owner meet your Dad. If your Dad liked the car then he could put down a deposit and you could fly out to get it and drive it home.

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > Manuél Ferrari
03/14/2014 at 21:52

Kinja'd!!!0

That would be the best! Too bad.

I'm just trying to think into the future. If I buy a cheaper commuter car now, I can save up and get the Alfa as a second car. But I still want to have a fun driving car before I can afford 2 cars! I feel like the Fiesta ST would be fun at first but would start to bore me after a few years. A PDK Cayman would be perfect. Fun to drive, roomy/practical, and easy to live with day to day. I might regret not getting a manual though...

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro

Hahaha now I really want to.

Now that I'm home from college, my dad has narrowed my choices down to basically two options.

1. He'll let me take his Mercedes (for free) to college/to use as my own. I asked him if he can transfer ownership to me so I can just sell it before it depreciates any more, but he said no.

2. OR I have to buy a Fiesta ST.

I'm wondering if I should just save my money and drive that awful car, or buy my own.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Brian Silvestro

Omg the answer is so easy!

Take the free car! He's taking the depreciation hit!

Free always wins! No matter what. No matter how much the car sucks.

Drive it and save up his offer to buy you sketching until later!

Plus girls won't know the car sucks! They'll think you're a high roller , haha
